This is a great question that more and more people are asking. And you have to really think about this. Who uses a landline anymore? I can only think of one reason to use a landline and I will get to this momentarily.
First of all; what is a landline? It's basically the line that the phone company puts into your streets and into your home so you could use a telephone.
But back to the first question. Why would anyone want to use a landline? Are you paying for a phone line in the old traditional way? Do you have phone service with a company that actually uses the lines that run on top of telephone poles and run into your house? If you answered yes and you do, then you are also probably paying about $40, $50, maybe even $60 a month or even over.
I was just talking to a family member recently who told me they were paying MCI about $80 a month for phone service. What gets me is that MCI doesn't even own these phone lines. Verizon does. And $80 a month. "Are you crazy?" I asked them. After giving them some advice, they now use the local cable company and pay $29 a month no matter who they call in the U.S. and how long they stay on the phone. It's always $29 (until the contract ends in a year but I'll get to that later).
Landlines are obsolete. Unnecessary. Unless (and here is the only reason to have one) you need an alarm system. Some alternate phone services can not handle emergency calls automatically made from an alarm system to an emergency calling area (whether it's the security company or the police). If you don't need or don't have an alarm system, there is no need for a landline.
In my honest opinion, everyone should have a cell phone and a VoIP. Click here for a description of VoIP if you need one. Many services that offer VoIP are free. THEY ARE FREE! I hope everyone heard me that time. The days of paying for long distance let alone even thinking of it are over. Prices are coming down for all services. Cell phone plans are cheap and the service is getting better and better. Use a cable company for your phone service OR get a cell phone and use VoIP. Any other way and you are throwing money out the window.
