The "Telecommunications Act of 1996" opened up the local phone service market to competition. In exchange, the RBOC's (Regional Bell Operating Companies like Verizon and SBC, ) were allowed to compete in the long distance telephone market.
This allows us, the consumers, to be able to pick another phone company for local service. We now have a choice. And there are many choices.
Along with cell phones there are now VoIP's that allow you to make calls through your computer. Some of these companies offer free service and so this really opens up the competition to consumers who want a variety of services to use and not have to use just one company. |
- Look at the competition.
- Compare their rates.
- Keep a written record of all your contacts for each company you speak to and what they promise (include each person's name).
- Decide on a company.
- Click here or call that company and tell them you want them as your new service.
- Call your the company you are using now and not happy with and tell them who you are switching.
- Follow through and don't get upset if there are problems or glitches. In the long run you will be much happier. If for some reason, you have a very bad problem with your transfer or lack of transfer, do not get angry at the new company. Take a look at "problems" below if you need help in dealing with the problems that may occur.
